What Is the CPTI?

The Canine Personality Type Indicator (CPTI) is a science-informed personality framework developed exclusively for dogs. Unlike generic pet quizzes, the CPTI measures your dog's personality across four independent behavioural dimensions — producing a four-letter type code that reflects how your dog actually thinks, feels, and engages with the world.

O / S

Sociality

Does your dog rush to greet every stranger, or hang back and observe before deciding who earns their trust? This dimension captures how your dog manages their social energy — from the outgoing dog who treats every passerby as a potential best friend, to the selective dog who reserves real warmth for their inner circle.

A / P

Exploration

Some dogs charge headfirst into every new environment, while others prefer to read the room first. The Exploration dimension measures your dog's relationship with novelty — whether they're energised by the unknown or more comfortable operating from a place of familiarity and preparation.

F / I

Cooperation

Does your dog orbit your every move, eager to be in sync with the family? Or do they quietly set their own agenda and join on their own terms? This dimension reflects how your dog balances their need for group connection against their drive for personal autonomy.

R / V

Emotionality

How quickly does your dog bounce back from a loud noise, a change in routine, or an unfamiliar visitor? The Emotionality dimension captures your dog's emotional baseline — from the dog who shrugs off disruption without a second thought, to the one who processes life's moments with deep sensitivity.

For Cat Owners

What Is the FPTI?

The Feline Personality Type Indicator (FPTI) is a companion framework to the CPTI — built specifically for cats. Because feline and canine personalities differ fundamentally in their behavioural biology, the FPTI uses its own four dimensions, producing a four-letter code that gives you a precise, science-grounded language for understanding your cat's nature.

G / S

Sociability

Is your cat the one who greets every guest at the door — or the one who disappears the moment the doorbell rings? The Sociability dimension reveals how your cat manages their social world, from the gregarious cat who lives for company to the solitary cat who is completely content in their own territory.

I / V

Curiosity

Does your cat immediately investigate every new object, smell, or sound? Or do they sit back, eyes narrowed, watching and assessing before committing to engagement? This dimension captures your cat's investigative drive — from restless, tactile explorers to careful, vigilant observers.

D / C

Willpower

Some cats are clear about what they want and how they want it — and they have no trouble communicating that. Others are more flexible and easygoing, willing to adapt to your schedule and preferences. The Willpower dimension captures this fundamental dynamic between assertion and accommodation.

R / T

Sensitivity

How does your cat respond when something unexpected happens — a knock at the door, a change in furniture, a new pet in the home? The Sensitivity dimension measures your cat's emotional reactivity, from the cat who processes change with lightning-fast intensity to the one who takes almost everything in stride.

Discover What Your Breed Is Wired For

Breed shapes personality in powerful ways. A Border Collie and a Basset Hound may both be OAFR types, but they express that personality through completely different energy levels, instincts, and needs. The Pawsona Breed Explorer maps CPTI and FPTI tendencies across 60+ dog breeds and 30+ cat breeds, helping you understand not just who your pet is — but why.

Each breed profile includes a full personality tendency overview, training recommendations specific to that breed's natural drives, temperament notes, lifespan data, and compatibility insights with other CPTI or FPTI types. Whether you're a Golden Retriever parent or a Maine Coon companion, the Breed Explorer gives you context that goes far beyond the basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CPTI, FPTI, and how Pawsona works.

What is the CPTI — Canine Personality Type Indicator?

The CPTI is a proprietary personality framework developed specifically for dogs. It measures canine personality across four behavioral dimensions: Sociality (Outgoing vs. Selective), Exploration (Adventurous vs. Perceptive), Cooperation (Affiliative vs. Independent), and Emotionality (Relaxed vs. Vulnerable). The combination of these four dimensions produces a four-letter type code — such as OAFR or SPIV — that describes your dog's core personality. The CPTI was developed in collaboration with animal behaviour consultants and draws on decades of published research in comparative psychology and ethology.

What is the FPTI — Feline Personality Type Indicator?

The FPTI is the feline equivalent of the CPTI, designed from the ground up specifically for cats. Because feline and canine personalities differ fundamentally in their behavioural biology, the FPTI uses its own distinct set of four dimensions: Sociability (Gregarious vs. Solitary), Curiosity (Investigative vs. Vigilant), Willpower (Dominant vs. Compliant), and Sensitivity (Reactive vs. Temperate). The result is a four-letter code — such as GIDR or SVCT — that gives you a precise, science-informed language for understanding your cat's instincts, preferences, and emotional world.

How accurate are the results?

Pawsona's frameworks are based on observable, real-world pet behaviours rather than abstract concepts. Instead of asking vague questions like 'is your dog energetic?', our quizzes ask how your pet responds to specific, familiar situations — meeting a stranger on a walk, exploring a new space, or reacting to a sudden noise. This proxy-reporting methodology is well-established in comparative psychology and produces results that owners consistently recognise as accurate. Pet owners are the single best reporters of their animal's everyday behaviour, and our system is specifically designed to surface that knowledge.

How long does the quiz take?

Pawsona offers two quiz options for both dogs and cats: a Short Quiz with 4 questions (under 2 minutes) and a Full Quiz with 16 questions (under 5 minutes). Both produce a complete four-letter personality type result. The Full Quiz captures more nuance across all four personality dimensions, while the Short Quiz is ideal when you want a result quickly. You can always retake the Full Quiz later to refine your result.

Is Pawsona free?

Yes — Pawsona is completely free to use. The quiz, personality results, breed explorer, type library, and compatibility grid are all available at no cost with no account or subscription required. Pawsona is independently operated and supported by ads on content pages. We do not sell user data.

What do the four letters in my pet's type mean?

For dogs (CPTI): the first letter is Sociality (O = Outgoing, S = Selective), the second is Exploration (A = Adventurous, P = Perceptive), the third is Cooperation (F = Affiliative, I = Independent), and the fourth is Emotionality (R = Relaxed, V = Vulnerable). For cats (FPTI): the first letter is Sociability (G = Gregarious, S = Solitary), the second is Curiosity (I = Investigative, V = Vigilant), the third is Willpower (D = Dominant, C = Compliant), and the fourth is Sensitivity (R = Reactive, T = Temperate).

How is this different from a basic pet personality quiz?

Most pet personality quizzes offer simple, one-dimensional assessments — 'is your dog calm or hyper?' Pawsona measures personality across four independent behavioral dimensions simultaneously, producing 16 distinct types per species. This means two dogs can both be described as 'friendly' but have completely different relationships to independence, novelty, and stress — and Pawsona captures that distinction. Our results include detailed type descriptions, training guidance, enrichment recommendations, breed-specific notes, and compatibility insights.

Can I take the quiz for more than one pet?

Yes. You can take the CPTI quiz for multiple dogs and the FPTI quiz for multiple cats — each quiz runs independently and produces a separate, complete result. No account is required. Just start a new quiz for each pet. You can use the share buttons on each results page to save your pet's result card or share it directly to social media.
